Circle Top Windows a Popular Design

One popular style of decorative windows is circle top or radius windows.  This style is not a complete circle, but a perfect semi-circle, with a round top and flat bottom. There are variations in this style, such as elliptical (kind of a flat semi-circle) and ¾ round. They are most often used to accent rectangular window styles, such as casement or picture, and are also sometimes found in upper stories, at the top of staircases.  Below are some advantages and disadvantages of this style.

Advantages of circle top windows

One advantage of circle top windows is that they allow more light in, which can add a sense of depth to a room.  This is a great style for finishing off a big picture window or front door.  Another advantage is that they add interest to your home, and possibly contribute to higher resale value.  These windows come with many different add-ons, like grilles or stained glass that can make the look even more dramatic. The circle-top style also has the advantage of being able to allow in light and heat with out taking up a lot of space, like a bay or bow window, and without the space considerations need for casement styles that open outwardly. Also, because there are no moving parts, there is a high energy efficiency rating on these windows.

Disadvantages of circle top windows

Some of the disadvantages of circle top windows are the same as any other non-ventilating styles. The biggest disadvantage is that they are just that, non-ventilating.  Once in awhile, circle windows will be made in an opening style, but the radius style almost never opens.  Another disadvantage is the cost versus functionality. This style is almost always purely decorative, so if budget is a concern, these may not be a good choice. The cost of one of these units can go from $400 or $500 all the way up to over $1000 for the base price. One other disadvantage of this style is that often, they are sold as a "package" with a casement window, especially at many home improvement stores. Ordering directly from the manufacturer may solve this problem.
