All About Single Hung Windows

Much like double hung windows, single hung windows are usually rectangle in shape and most often set vertically in a home, though they can be designed to fit almost any opening.  With this style, the bottom sash opens and closes, and the panes can be tilted in for cleaning.  The frame can be made from many materials.  The following is a list of frame materials from least to most expensive; vinyl, aluminum, wood, wood clad with either vinyl or aluminum, fiberglass and steel. The most inexpensive, most popular frame material is vinyl. The cost of replacing single hung windows depends on how many windows you have to replace, the size, type of frame and type of glass. Single hung windows come with at least two panes of glass layered together, with space between that is sometimes filled with an inert, harmless glass for extra insulation.

Advantages of single hung windows

The advantages of single hung windows are similar to those of double hung windows. Advantages include increased energy savings for the homeowner, especially when replacing old, single pane windows.  Vinyl is not a very conductive material, so less air enters or escapes, keeping the home at a more even temperature and eliminating or at least reducing drafts.  The lower sash seals to the frame when closed. This is accomplished using high quality weather stripping, usually closed cell foam. One more advantage is the cost.  These are the most inexpensive style of window, but you don't have to trade efficiency for cost. They will still upgrade the appearance of your home and decrease your utility costs over the long run.

Disadvantages of single hung windows

There are just a couple of disadvantages of single hung windows. One is that only the bottom sash opens, as opposed to double hung where both sashes open. This limited sash opening can reduce ventilation a bit.  The other disadvantage is that only the bottom sash tilts in for cleaning, so you'll still have to clean the top pane on the outside of the house.
