Pleated Shades

Trying to figure out what to do with your windows? Sure you want to let light into your home, enjoy the view, keep an eye on the kids, and watch out for any suspicious activities around the neighborhood. But what about privacy, controlling drafts, or blocking out the midday sun? Why not take a look at the simple, economical, and elegant pleated shade?

Pleated Shade Overview

At their most basic, all shades are a piece of material that slides up or down to let in or block out light. Differences between the types of shades, such as vinyl roller, roman, and pleated, are found mainly in the manner in which they raise or lower as well as their material construction. Pleated shades consist of a single piece of crisply Z-pleated fabric that when raised, folds completely up and out of view. Pleated shades are constructed of polyester fabrics in a wealth of patterns, textures, and colors.

Pleated shades are raised and lowered through a variety of mechanisms. These include a simple loop-control pull cord woven through the shade and attached to a metal rail, top down/bottom up operation, remote or hardwired motorized operation, and cordless operation that adds safety for households with small children or curious pets.

Types of Pleated Shades

Pleated shades range in opacity. Sheer fabrics without light filtering liners let in the most light and provide little privacy when lowered. Blackout shades that have a solid fabric or metallic backing, normally a neutral white to the exterior, provide the most privacy. These room darkening shades block out the majority of light and provide maximum privacy when lowered.

Pleated Shade Options

Besides light filtering, some pleated shades offer an overlay. The overlay combines a solid pleated fabric with a sheer lace fabric to give the pleated shade a very elegant look. Because pleated shades sit inside the window frame and can disappear from view so easily, they are perfect for combining with soft window treatments like valances, swags, and drapes to create just the look you want. They can also be custom-made to fit any window shape.
