A patio is a paved area adjoining a house that is used for outdoor dining or grilling, growing plants in containers and for recreation. In Spain, a roofless courtyard is considered a patio.
Choosing Patio Furniture
Unlike lounging areas inside of the home that may be outfitted with any type of furniture, patio areas require special durable, weather resistant furniture called patio furniture. Patio furniture is specially designed to withstand the elements and it may be constructed from a variety of materials ranging from aluminum or iron to plastic or wood. Patio furniture is not only for outdoor patios; it is also used for indoor patios, sun porches, gardens and backyard areas. Because indoor patios and sun porches are still exposed to the sun, heat and cold, it's best to outfit them with patio furniture to avoid damaging regular, more expensive household furniture. Patio furniture may consist of anything from chair and table sets to loveseats and sofas.
Wrought Iron Patio Furniture
Because of its durability, Iron or wrought iron patio furniture is the most popular and most expensive type of patio furniture for uncovered patios and garden areas. Wrought iron is nearly impossible to destroy and if properly cared for, it can last a lifetime.
Aluminium Patio Furniture
Aluminum patio furniture is also a popular choice for its low cost, high weather resistance and durability.
Plastic Patio Furniture
Plastic patio furniture is the least expensive of all patio furniture because it is not as durable or attractive as aluminum or wrought iron. Plastic patio furniture can withstand most elements fairly well, but it may not hold up against strong winds or excessive amounts of weight. Plastic patio furniture is great for covered patios, but it is not uncommon to find it in gardens or uncovered patios.
Wicker Patio Furniture
Wicker patio furniture is a popular choice for sun porches, indoor patios and covered patios. It is considered the most elegant and attractive looking furniture among the different types of patio furniture. Wicker patio furniture is lightweight and less expensive than wrought iron styles. Wicker patio furniture is not recommended for permanent outdoor use, as it will not withstand harsh weather conditions. In addition, much like plastic patio furniture, wicker will not stand up against strong winds and excessive amounts of weight. Wood patio furniture is much more durable than wicker and it can withstand most weather conditions.
Wood Patio Furniture
While it may be used outdoors, many homeowners choose wood patio furniture for covered or partially covered patios.
