Shingles are used to Protect your Home

The use of shingles on the sides of a home has been replaced with vinyl or aluminum because they are more durable and require less maintenance. Wherever shingles are used however, they help to protect the material underneath from damage caused by sun, rain, wind and other elements of nature. Shingles are thin, rectangular pieces of material. They are installed by overlapping them in rows on the roof or the sides of a house or building. In addition to being protective, shingles are an important part of a homes appearance. Although they are rarely used as siding material anymore, homes or buildings that do use wood shingles as siding are desirable if the shingles are still in good condition. The type of shingles that are used on a roof can greatly altar the appearance of a home or building. Therefore, some research and consideration should be put into choosing roofing shingles if you are building new construction or replacing shingles on an existing building.

Types of Shingles

Types of shingles vary greatly in material, durability and price.

Slate Shingles

Slate shingles are very durable. They can last over 100 years. They are expensive; however they can create a beautiful, colorful look that will add to the appearance of a building. Those considering slate shingles should be aware that they are difficult to work with and break easily. This can add to the expense of their installation.

Wood Shingles

Another durable material for shingles is wood. These shingles tend to be made of cedar, spruce or treated pine. Cedar is the most durable of the three materials. Pine, if treated correctly can also be long lasting. Wood shingles are also one of the more expensive choices in roofing materials. The commonly used, less expensive shingle materials are asphalt and laminate.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt, the most frequently used, is reinforced with fiberglass or paper. Depending on the quality of the shingles, they can last from 20 to 30 years.

Laminated Shingles

Laminated shingles are increasing in popularity. They are made of multiple, staggered layers of material and can add character and color to a roof. Other materials than can be used for shingles are ceramic or clay tile, metal and even concrete.
